As Alvin Toffler once said, “The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.” The fast paced world that we live in requires us to quickly to do the three skills mentioned above – learn, unlearn, and relearn sometime on a daily basis. Formal education does teach us the fundamentals however we all recognize that the fundamentals are no longer enough.  And by the time we graduate from university or a college, the education we have received may be completely irrelevant.

This is why each and every one of us should pay close attention to new concepts, ideas, and movements that are happening around us. And try to educate ourselves as much as possible when the movement is here to stay.

If you are reading this blog you most likely grasp the above concepts and furthermore recognize that the marketing industry has transformed in the past decade. This doesn’t mean that the fundamentals are no longer relevant but it does mean that we should notice the alteration in the way we receive our information which is no longer TV or newsprint and do our best to adjust.

You may have already observed the switch within your peer group or your usage of mass media. Many are cancelling TV all together or just don’t spend the time watching it anymore.  And if you don’t want to take my word, there are numerous studies that prove this (Microsoft, IAB Canada). Hence, our attention and dollars are making their move online.

If you haven’t already, take the time to educate yourself about new media by doing research online, attending online webinars, workshops in your local area, or just stay updated with many of the useful thought leaders in the media community. My next couple of posts will be on where you can find this type of education and who should you follow and what you should learn.

  • Carla Casilli dwelled on "the possibility of a very large thought" here: http://carlacasilli.posterous.com/the-possibility-of-a-very-large-thought Before this is a possibility I can see the unlearn-relearn aspect is critical - since what we already know is the chief bottleneck to learning more. We naturally unlearn when we are forget things.

How To Make money with affiliate programs Today. Affiliate marketing is the easier and probably the most effective method to make money from the internet. It is basically, a kind of selling technique where potential buyers from your website are directed to the websites of sellers. For every click, the website owner gets a small commission.

  • Well...thanks to you I'm more familiar with the term " inbound marketing" and am using the methods to advertise my fashion blog:) It did take me awhile to grasp the whole idea of inbound marketing, but it gets easier and easier as you get into :)

And also another point to add is that a lot of professional designation bodies, such as the Institute of Chartered Accountants, which I'm involved with, keeps all its members updated about changes in the industry, which ensures that they spread necessary announcements regarding topics of relearning rather than requiring members to find the stuff themselves when the time comes.

Just based on what you said, a good idea for any time that you deal with a client is to have a database of the work (and tools / strategy used) done for them, and then update them in the future any time that new strategies or methods become available. This will really take the learn/unlearn/relearn strategy into action that you clients can see. Might be a good idea for you and every other company in the world.

It is true that one has to stay on top of the current business trends if one is to survive in this world, especially in recession. Those companies that dont embrace change will be left alone in the playing field.

I definitely see the change that you're talking about, it is slow but certainly steady and I can only imagine where we'll be in 5-10 years from now... I think it's crucial to stay connected and educate yourself as much as possible on the fast-moving and improving online medium, because if we don't do it gradually, one day we'll wake up and feel like an outsider that has no idea what happened. I'm so glad for this blog and all the wonderful, useful info you provide! Thank you, Alex! =)
